I already kind of knew that it wouldn't be a romance - but I was hoping for a bit of something sweet or adorable! Overkill in the foreshadowing department. Too much foreshadowing, yet each tease didn’t really add much new info. It seemed like the same hint was being told over and over. I can't reveal special spoilers but this book takes a twist that it melted my heart, I felt everything with Helena. The ending was infinitely painful and heart-breaking. Books hardly ever make me actually that emotional so this was special. Just read it!

Torre knows how to write characters and plotting that draw you into the story, and she’s one of only a few authors that could keep me invested in an unlikeable character like Helena. I genuinely cared for her by the end, which is saying a lot. However, John Rentoul from the UK's liberal The Independent, who describes himself as an "ultra Blairite with a slavish admiration for Tony", and John Rosenthal, from the conservative Pajamas Media, both denounced the film because it was made with financial support from the German government. Rentoul also criticized Polanski, describing the film as "propaganda" and a "Blair hating movie". [30] The Ghost has everything a great thriller needs. There's the slightly-too-curious-for-his-own-good Everyman who stumbles onto something huge, there's the geeky technical delight in details (here, of ghostwriting), and there's the strong suspense and atmosphere of barely-restrained menace. There's even the obligatory and now outdated scene where the protagonist, badly shaken, does his research in an internet cafe, and the obligatory scene where a GPS is used to retroactively follow someone. If a political thriller with a lot of cynicism and a slow boil sounds good to you, you will enjoy The Ghost. No. I promise you. They need to do something radical—take a risk. It’s a great opportunity for you. And the money will be good. The kids won’t starve.”

All good books are different but all bad books are exactly the same.[..] And what they have in common, these bad books, be they novels or memoirs, is this: they don't ring true. I'm not saying that a good book is true necessarily, just that it feels true for the time you are reading it. Told through the eyes of Helena, Mark, the ghostwriter, and Kate, Helena’s agent, all sides of Helena are revealed. Mark and Kate's perspectives felt superfluous and dragged the story out. While they add elements that soften Helena's character, it would have made a greater impact if the reader got the point through Helena's own words.

What an emotional and powerful end for a beautifully written book that I won't soon forget! Would highly recommend!! The way Alessandra desribes her and everything around her - I felt like I was right there with her - or at least sitting in front of Netflix watching THE GHOSTWRITER! Please Netflix, come do this!!!An excellent plot with fantastic characterization, this really was an incredible read. A well-written, well-paced novel about secrets, betrayal, guilt, lies, and confession. This is Alessandra Torre’s fourteenth book and she says it was the hardest to write. The story is interesting. A ghostwriter is sent to the mysterious and fortified abode of a disgraced former British prime minister, to help complete his autobiography after the previous writer turns up dead. The new ghostwriter uncovers a sinister conspiracy behind the prime minister's successful career and the death of the previous ghost writer.

I realized early on that this book was going to break my heart. But it did it in the most incredible way. This is another book that is going to stay with me for a very long time. But it is a Robert Harris book and, as I've stated, I like his books. It didn't take long for me to start enjoying it. Oh sure, there was the usual cringe moments - this man cannot write a sex scene to save his life. In fact, he can't even write a "sexy" scene to save his life: this was another stellar Traveling Sister read! All of us thoroughly enjoyed it, and we had a wonderful discussion as usual.... once again ladies thank you for adding so much to my reading experience!💕 Now, I have one last story to write. It'll be my best one yet, with a jaw-dropping twist that will leave them stunned and gasping for breath. Finally, while pro ghostwriters will hand you a polished finished manuscript, you can’t expect them to do the copy editing and proofreading too. Like any other writer, they’re too close to the work to notice every little mistake and typo. Just as if you wrote the manuscript, the best practice is to have someone else copy edit and polish it for publication. But if you have more complex considerations or require legal advice (e.g., for a libel read of your book, if it’s contentious) getting a lawyer to draft the contract may be a wise move. Unless you’re already paying for a lawyer, this will cost you some money. Copy editing costs As Helena and the Ghostwriter begin writing the most important book of Helena's career, the reader is given glimpses into Helena's life, her past, why she lives the way she does and why this book is so important to her. It has also been suggested that as a former supporter of Tony Blair - but subsequently disillusioned, this was Harris perhaps with some kind of literary/political point to make, with particular reference to Blair's role in the invasion of Iraq? I had tears in my eyes 20% in, I was exclaiming out loud by 40% that this was such an amazing book, and at 70% I tweeted that I suspected this had a chance of being my top read of 2017. I never could have predicted the ending, the twists, the past that had turned Helena into the witch the townsfolk never saw. Helena is difficult to like, but she's impossible not to feel for. My heart broke for her, I ached over the life lessons she never should have had to learn, and I hoped so dearly that something positive could come of her terrible prognosis. Helena is a fierce woman and it was incredible to read the book from her perspective. The secondary characters were phenomenal as well; I loved the little bits of gossip that made Helena real, the people who come to her side unwelcome, but necessary, and the constructive change they brought to her bleak world. I felt every emotion as I read The Ghostwriter and I slipped into this book like it was my life too, it was like being a writer myself. It was captivating, heartbreaking, and so profound. Pierce Brosnan plays the character of Adam Lang, who has echoes of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. The character is linked to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the war on terror and the special relationship with the United States. The author of the book on which the film is based has said he was inspired at least in part by anger toward Blair's policies, and called for him to face war crimes trials. [14] Sometimes this can come from the initial meeting: I’ve done this, where I’ve recorded a short section of an interview to go away and work on. On other occasions I’ve done this via a second meeting or via material presented or available, such as previous interviews and writings.

Beyond the Book

The character development of Helena was quite remarkable.... at the beginning of the book she came across as such a cold harsh woman, with a list of ridiculous rules... who I didn’t like very much..... by the end of this book I saw her sense of humor and she had even captured a piece of my heart.... she was so real and raw and well-developed I was shedding tears for her at the end....
