With captivating histories, detailed route descriptions and practical hillcraft knowledge, this is your essential guide to wild adventure living. I picked this book up about a year ago and have been slowly working my way through the locations in the book. His engaging travel writing documents the fascinating history of each bothy and the adventurers who use them. This first ever guide to Scottish bothies reveals the country’s unique and often hidden network of bothy cabins and mountain huts.Even for the armchair enthusiast, the book is so well organized and presented (with excellent maps and indexes, too) that just by reading it you feel you are learning more about the real Scotland. Scattered across Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes lies a unique and often hidden network of bothies, once-abandoned crofts, farmsteads and mountain huts that are open and free to stay in. A photographer, surveyor and ex-maintenance officer for Dibidil – a Mountain Bothy Association’s bothy on the Isle of Rùm – he is your perfect guide to exploring Scotland’s wild places. This first ever guide to the Scottish bothies reveals the country’s unique and often hidden network of bothy cabins and mountain huts which are free to stay in and offer a chance to experience the ultimate in wild adventure living. Firstly the pictures themselves are brilliant, and a brief history is given in relation to the bothy.

Hiding away in one is my mental fantasy on a tough work day, so I love thumbing thru this book for inspiration and smiles. A simple shelter in remote country for the use and benefit of all those who love being in wild and lonely places' (Mountain Bothies Association).

Rich in knowledge and information that reflects Allan's wealth of bothying experience, The Scottish Bothy Bible is the essential guide to wild adventure living. Engaging travel writing documents the captivating history of each bothy and the adventurers who use them.

What I really like is the author gives honest accounts of the places, if one is a bit run down, you know about it before you go so you’re not expecting 5* luxury at the end of your walk.Scattered across Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes, these evocative abandoned crofts and farmsteads are free to stay in and offer a chance to experience the ultimate in wild adventure living. Some don’t like that they are advertised in this way, but for those truly interested and willing to follow the code and treat them with respect, it is an invaluable resource that I would highly recommend. Geoff Allan is Scotland s premier bothy expert: founder of the Bothies on a Bike blog he has hiked, biked and slept the night in each and every Scottish bothy. Let seasoned outdoor expert Geoff Allan navigate you across burns and bogs, taking you to Viking longhouses, island hideaways and highland homesteads. Well written, stunning pictures, and lots of good information and tips on not only the bothies themselves but also what to bring/pack for your journey which I found extremely useful.

The Scottish bothy bible is the first ever complete guide book to Scotland’s bothies, featuring full details on over 100 MBA bothies and more. I'm sure it will be of use to the adventurous as, even though I'm not a hiker/mountaineer, it seems to have vital information I would have thought necessary for each Bothy: size (rooms, sleeping numbers), map lat/long location (plus indicative maps), fuel/water supply (do you need to take any etc) key local attractions, public transport, special notes about access/restrictions, different routes to each (parking, distance from and time of walk, terrain).

This first ever complete guide to the Scottish bothies reveals the country s unique and often hidden network of bothy cabins and mountain huts. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Geoff Allan is Scotland’s premier bothy expert: founder of the ‘Bothies on a Bike’ blog he has hiked, biked and slept the night in each and every Scottish bothy. Detailed information on the locations, approach routes, including alternative routes – on foot, by bike and kayak – with nine supporting maps. to know there is a bothy in the middle of Knoydart is interesting, but i would have liked pinpoint maps showing paths and approaches etc, rather than just a grid ref.
