About this deal

The book is based primarily around the character of Moominpappa, who was heavily inspired by Jansson's father, Viktor Jansson. Stajemy się wszyscy zanadto do siebie przyzwyczajeni i wszystko jest wciąż takie samo, prawda, kochanie? It's rather quiet and lonely at first, but as they begin to explore their unusual surroundings the Moomins discover some funny and surprising new things about themselves. Moominpappa is dissatisfied with his life in Moomin Valley, so he organises the family to set off on a journey to find a lighthouse in the sea. However, a lot of her writing involves setting out telling details, juxtaposing them in a controlled way and having the reader make the links.

Meanwhile, Moominmamma becomes increasingly melancholy as her dream of planting a garden fails, and her longing for home grows stronger. Only the mystery and unfathomable vastness of the sea and the sky flooding over him and past him that could never disappoint him. It's a powerful and believable story about depression, and I found it moving and relevant to my life, but it's so bleak. The island proves to be a magical place with aloof seahorses, trees that move, a friendly groke and a mystery of a deserted lighthouse. This title is where the Moomin books do start to take a dark turn, I guess beginning Moominland Midwinter, but if book series are supposed to grow with its readership, (Comet in Moominland was published in the mid 1940s, this one in 1965) then this series has. Na szczęście Mama Muminka bez pudła trafiła w samo sedno i przywróciła mi chociaż część wiary w ludzkość. I think what I missed most was the side characters, like Snufkin and Snorkmaiden and Too-Ticky, and all the other little creatures that filled up Moominvalley. Moominpappa yearns to make a fresh start, to find a rocky island and lighthouse where he’ll feel alert and important again. When he starts to notice that nature is not as predictable as he had assumed and that it cannot be controlled this way, he begins to find a more authentic understanding.

Perhaps the strangest of all the very strange Moomin books, we begin with the family safe in Moominvalley, but Moominpappa feels useless and unhappy, and they decide to journey to a distant island and live in a lighthouse. Moomintroll is seaking independence and maturity and is trying to forge his own purpose which he accidentally stumbles into by reaching out to the Groke who is the very embodiment of fear and lonliness and which even the trees and the sand are afraid of. When Moomintroll reports that he has extinguished a small fire in the moss, his father becomes unexpectedly cross and obsessive: "Don't imagine that a spot like this isn't dangerous. And an island is the perfect setting for this story, for the characters become more and more insular as they explore their new environs.

But how is Moominmamma to grow her flowers and what strange fate befell the last keeper of the lighthouse? I suspect this lost something in the translation, some parts didn't read easily but the ideas and the beautiful illustrations more than made up for it. The trip is initiated by Moominpappa, who has lost touch with himself and has started to feel unnecessary. Still some strange moments of magic and wonder, of course, but tempered by cynicism and a warm-but-realistic sense of the petty and no-so-petty impulses that drive people.

Moominpappa is having what amounts to an existential crises and this piece gets subtlety at his emotions and Moominmamma's attempt to deal with this crises. There have been in picture books and in the graphic novel occasional works of genius where the producer of the text and the producer of the art being the same person fuse the art and the text into a seamless work of genius. The family decides to set off on their boat and live on the tiny dot of an island with a lighthouse on it that Moominpappa has "claimed". But how is Moominmamma to grow her flowers and what could have happened to the last keeper of the lighthouse? After Tove Jansson's death, the producer of the 1990 Moomin television series, Dennis Livson, planned to make a film adaptation based on Moominpappa at Sea, but Tove Jansson's niece Sophia Jansson did not give him permission for the adaptation. Not once did the family think of Snork or Snorkmaiden when they completely moved with the intention of living on a remote island for the rest of their lives. Aquí empieza el inicio del final de la historia de los Moomin en Moominvalley, por lo tanto te deja una sensación de tristeza.
