About this deal

In 1927, tanned skin was the new chic and Jean Patou conceived Chaldea oil, the first sunscreen product – never before seen.

He says that he discerns a rubbery note, which might be the "doll's head" element that others have noticed. I use it in different climates, including hot days - the heat makes the flowers of this perfume vibrate even more, becoming even more alive and exuberant. The jasmine seems considerably less indolic, while retaining the joyful uplift of the magical Rose and Jasmine notes. Calèche has austerity, like her sisters Bandit (les cigarettes as also the galbanum with oakmoss and either civet ! Probably because I am the mother of all rescued cats (all the cats in the world can come live with me, honestly!I love vintage and perfumes with a bit of skank, but the vintage indolic floral genre is not for me. Soon the thick red rose and very indolic jasmine flow in and take over, but the musk weaves in and out and so does civet.

after wearing it about 10 times I find that I can't stand the stale notes and that's the end of Joy, for me. A dandy of the Roaring Twenties and an enlightened aesthete with impeccable taste, he travelled all over Europe and the United States, with an eternal cigarette between his fingertips. after the initial vinegary animalistic civet aroma dies down, a beautiful bouquet of flowers emerged, perfect for just lounging on your chaise lounge in an evening gown. The indoles are a reminder of how nature isn't sterile, that these plants are living things that go through all stages from tart buds to inevitable, stinky decay.

I live in Spain where jasmine overflows garden fences like a weed and it's a joy to walk down the street in the evening breathing jasmine perfumed air in summer. I have a tiny full vintage bottle that I picked up from my grandmother's house many years ago and have managed to hang onto it all this time. It evokes a spent beauty, in the dry down, on some days and it's not doing it for you, rather just because it's Joy, after all. The composition starts with fragrant jilt tuberose, luscious rose, ylang-ylang blossom, aldehydes, sweet and mouthwatering pear, and green notes. Top notes are Bulgarian Rose, Ylang-Ylang and Tuberose; middle notes are Jasmine and May Rose; base notes are Musk and Sandalwood.

Like Cinnamonpeelerswife, I find that Joy puts me in mind of a pristine glamor and of the opera (though for me there's nothing dated about it). and Shalimar, this is also one great joyful composition that is exact and pure rendering the perfume fiction as invisible while making it feel as identity of an individual. After 2 hours, I have a pungent rose note, not as dark as I would like, and a faint powdery background, I can't distinguish the notes, but cat pee lingers faintly. Clearing out some papers last week I found a couple of folded sheets of paper that for god knows what reason I printed out years ago.

Dark rose, indolic jasmine, strong tuberose and stinky civet but worked out so perfectly one has to surrender to it’s bizarre beauty when you really appreciate classic jewels from a glorious and gorgeous era. Jean Patou also inaugurated "Le Coin des riens" (The Nook for Little Nothings) where he sold atypical accessories that were between fashion and design. It is sooooo very far apart from my usual style of gourmands or oriental spices that I simply can't understand all the love for it.

but JOY by Jean Patou, which is just as big, gradually fell into oblivion and was finally discontinued. It’s not dirty, it’s not extravagant in a more contemporary way (think 70’s/80’s stunners); it’s simply beautiful. Joy" would be a more fitting name for L'Air du Temps than it is for Joy, IMO: there's nothing lighthearted or playful about this perfume. Some of the technologies we use are necessary for critical functions like security and site integrity, account authentication, security and privacy preferences, internal site usage and maintenance data, and to make the site work correctly for browsing and transactions. then we are already making a step towards aromatic territory towards Ivoires asafoetida, orris, pepper. I'm currently soaked in it while reading Nightwood (1936), Djuna Barnes' decadent, modernist tour de force, and it couldn't be more fitting: both celebrate life through death--in the scent's case, feline glands, rotting flowers, and plastic. Joy is preserved in its original 1930 formulation in the archives of the Osmothèque, donated to the collection by Jean Kerléo, formerly head perfumer at Jean Patou.
