About this deal

Adrian West has produced a charming book with a strong emphasis on wellbeing: how and why stargazing is good for us, physically and mentally. This is very much a book for anyone who is just starting out and finding their stargazing feet for the very first time, or anyone with a passing interest. From beginner’s telescopes and accessories to stargazing experience vouchers and getaways, here we offer some of the best astronomy gifts to give to enthusiastic stargazers, both young and older, for Christmas 2023.

But what, exactly, comes next? Too many newcomers to astronomy get lost in dead ends and quit in frustration. Astronomy for beginners shouldn't be that way. For such a familiar concept, time is actually a rather complex topic. There are subtleties, such as how exactly A substantial chunk of the humor consists of quips about British sitcoms and gameshows and radio programs of the era, and these pop-cultural references went over my head. “He spoke like Ian McDavies from the show Partridge Crossing, but with the body of James Dopplehammer.” I made that up. But it’s a good example of the descriptions that left me scratching my head. At first I Googled some of the references, but eventually I just gave up. Straight-laced Christine is alarmed but intrigued by her new neighbor, imaginative, weird Moon whose violent reputation precedes her. Stargazing tells the true story of a young student who went to work in various lighthouses in remote parts of Scotland. This really is all you need to know about this book. The nicely is that much over used but in this case perfectly appropriate cliché of it being love poem to a vanished age. Peter Hill drops out of his University course to take advantage of a summer's lighthouse keeping. He is at the tail end of the manned lighthouse tradition and you sense his deep love and admiration for these brave and adventurous men. When Peter Hill was a 19 year old student in the early 1970s he decided, despite having no experience, to be a lighthouse keeper. His story takes us briefly through his student life, his job interview, & on to the lighthouse work itself where he met a wonderful array of people. We learn there are more stars than can be counted, that stars are born in gas clouds, that they are different colours and that our very own Sun is a star.

There are certain parts which show vividly how parents restrict their kids of certain activities just because they're of a certain gender. You get a few descriptions of the islands and sea life and wind and rain. But largely it’s about the personalities of the fellow light house keepers and what they watched on television.Dr Chanda Prescod-Weinstein’s debut book is two things: a journey into the world of cosmology and particle physics, and a refreshingly eye-opening insight into the too-often exclusionary arena that is science. It doesn’t try to walk linearly along the spectrum or through a history of discoveries, as the journey of humanity’s discovery hasn’t worked like that. No book like this could avoid jumping around in history, but overall there’s a logical flow. Stargazing experience vouchers make for a fantastic gift for anyone interested in astronomy! Vouchers are redeemable against events which take place in some of the UK’s best stargazing locations such as the North East, North West and central Wales. These entry level binoculars perform extremely well for their price and are a perfect introduction to visual astronomy, escpecially children. Figures, photographic plates and footnotes all serve to support the text throughout the book, and a very helpful glossary is provided at the end. As a concise introduction, Planets manages to cover an impressive amount and will undoubtedly leave the reader keen to learn more.
