About this deal

This lens does not feature optical image stabilisation, so it relies on the camera body's own built-in stabilisation, which is fine unless you're an owner of an early Sony Alpha camera. Having a slightly different focal length to the other lenses, the Tamron does have a narrower field of view, starting at 28mm and finishing at 75mm (32 - 75°). But I did not see a huge difference in this when using the lens, you can still get very much the same shots as you would with the other 24-70s. The lens itself was very sharp and gave edge-to-edge sharpness throughout the range of the zoom.

Samyang have paid close attention to this aspect of lens use, employing a 9-segment diaphragm with rounded blades for more pleasing bokeh. There is a fairly wide and textured focus ring at the end of the lens. There are no hard stops at the ends of the range, making it harder to set focus at infinity. Polariser users should be pleased that the 82mm filter thread doesn't rotate on focus. The Samyang 24-70mm F2.8 (900 euros) is globally a very good lens at a reasonable price but the competition is very tough and offer excellent options that are all better in one or several areas compared to the Samyang 24-70 F2.8 Whereas the lenses we will be reviewing below can give the same results (if not better) than some dedicated prime lenses. Meaning yes, you can use a zoom lens for portraits or street photography with these options below. Parfocal test : the lens is par focal when fist focusing at 70mm then zooming out /in but is not par focal when focusing first at 24mm then zooming Being the second heaviest lens at 886g, you do feel this one when carrying it. The weight was a bit more front-heavy when on my A7R IV, which I put down to the longer length of the lens at 136mm. However, it wasn’t uncomfortable when on the camera and over the shoulder.

Cinematic Video AF: As the AF speed is carefully controlled during video recording, focus wobble is reduced, so very stable video recording is possible. Samyang has already made some pretty tasty AF primes in the FE mount, but its first zoom is a bold statement of intent, especially as the f/2.8-speed 24-70mm Thanks for taking the time to read our blog, we really do hope they help you out and answer some of your questions. It's actually significantly heavier than both of its main rivals, the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM (886g) and the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art (830g). si vous avez absolument besoin d’un 24mm et que le budget est important alors c’est une bonne option mais pour 33% plus cher on a le Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art qui est la référence des 24-70 On to using the lens itself, the first thing I noticed from the Tamron compared to the others was how light this lens is. At only 540g it is nearly half the weight of the Samyang and just over 300g lighter than the Sony. This made it very easy to carry and use. This is undoubtedly a premium lens in terms of its construction and finish, and the only bum note in an otherwise exceptional optical performance is the amount of barrel distortion at 24mm. It won’t be an issue with subjects such as landscapes, or even portraits, but you will notice it if there are any straight lines in a scene that are located close to the image edges. It’s unlikely to be a deal breaker given that the Samyang does everything else so well, and the price tag is very hard to go past.

Linear MF Focus Control: Provides convenience to video shooters by matching the torque of the focus ring as closely as possible to that of a manual focus lens when shooting video in manual mode. This lens has a dust and moisture resistant design that is sealed in seven different places which makes it well-suited to life in both the field and the studio. The minimum focal distance is just 35cm, adding versatility and making it possible to produce a unique perspective close to the subject. The short focal distance also makes it easier to take portraits with exaggerated features, such as food on tables and interior shots in narrow spaces.

Introduction

While Samyang now has a fairly extensive line of dedicated cinema lenses, these are all primes, so obviously the new zoom is a first for everybody and it’s been designed to have appeal for both applications. Historically, it was cinematographers discovering the value aspect of Samyang’s manual focus primes for photography – and talking about them – that started to get the brand more widely known. Similarly, Samyang made a number of mid-range AF zoom lenses in the 1980s for Nikon, Pentax and Minolta 35mm SLRs (the latter, of course, becoming Sony’s A mount).

Now you may be thinking, yes these all offer a zoom range of 24-70mm, apart from the Tamron with its unique 28-75mm, and yes, they all have a fixed fast aperture of F2.8 throughout the lens. But with all four being at such different prices for many of the same features what makes them unique from each other? To answer that let us have a look at the specs side by side: There is a very smooth electronic manual focus ring and this can be used in MF mode or in the DMF mode where MF can be used to actively over-ride AF. These functions are activated in the camera menus. Focusing is down to 0.24m, or 0.79 feet, a maximum magnification of 0.13x. Apart from the lens name engraved on the barrel, that is it. Small primes such as this could still benefit the user by having a distance and depth of field scale, enabling easy setting of hyperfocal distance, but sadly no room has been found to provide these. The upside is likely to be a more compact and more sophisticated optical construction is possible, along of course with AF. Compared to the other 24-70 and 28-70 the Samyang is the less sharp one, so it will be more at ease on 24Mpix or 33Mpix than on 50-61Mpix First, there were the inexpensive manual focus lenses, then the excellent AF lenses and now Samyang spread its wings a little further with its first AF zoom lens. A new landmark whilst celebrating 50 years of Samyang lenses. The Samyang AF 24-70mm f/2.8 FE, for Sony FE full-frame and E crop sensor cameras (giving a "35mm equivalent" field of view of 36-105mm), offers weather sealing, constant aperture, a 9 bladed diaphragm for smooth bokeh and, very interestingly, a parfocal design. Most zoom lenses are varifocal in design, which means that lenses should be refocused after the zoom setting is changed. Parfocal lenses maintain their focus as they are zoomed, which has interesting implications for videography as well as stills photography. So now let's couple the new lens up with the 42MP Sony A7R III body and see if Samyang has hit the ground running as they enter the fiercely competitive world of the fast standard zoom. Optical construction is 17 elements in 14 groups, including 2 Aspheric, one Hybrid Aspheric, 3 HR (High Refractive index) and 3 ED (Extra-Low Dispersion). The coating is Samyang's well established UMC. For improved bokeh, the diaphragm comprises 9 blades. The lens is also weather-sealed.

It has a near-circular 9 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image, a minimum focusing distance of 0.35m (1.15ft), a stepping AF motor for fast and quiet autofocusing, a configurable Custom switch with two different modes, and it's also dust and moisture resistant. The AF 24-70mm F2.8 FE has several features optimized for video shooting to effectively capture the trend change of users who need the flexibility of not only photography but also video shooting. We didn't experience too much "hunting", either in good or bad light, with the lens accurately focusing most, but not all of the time. It's also a quiet performer, which makes this lens equally well-suited to both video recording and more candid stills shooting. The minimum focus distance of 0.35m is slightly shorter than in the Sony lens, enabling a slightly larger magnification ratio of 0.27x at the long end of the zoom range. A ‘Custom’ dual-mode switch is featured, which is nominally used for switching between autofocus and manual focus, but can be customized to set other functions like aperture control. Samyang says that additional functions will be added in the future, through firmware updates.
