Oscars: Tales of Artistry, Environmental Activism and Political Struggle Lead the Documentary Feature Race". One guy says, with the passion of a convert on whom enlightenment is dawning like the rising sun: “You don’t have to be bent to wear makeup! Brett Morgen’s Moonage Daydream is a 140-minute shapeshifting epiphany-slash-freakout leading to the revelation that, yes, we’re lovers of David Bowie and that is that.

The film is divided into nearly two dozen "chapters" in the DVD release with the first hour covering Bowie starting in London up to his departure to West Berlin. Morgen worked closely with Tony Visconti on overseeing all of these never-before-released materials. It is a genre-defying cinematic experience based on one of the most iconic and global rock stars of all time, destined to be one of the defining cultural moments of the year.

Working in cooperation with the estate, Morgen was granted access to an archive of five million different items, including paintings, drawings, recordings, photographs, films, and journals. Angie is not mentioned, although Iman is: this film is about the public Bowie, the Bowie of surfaces and images. Cobain: Montage of Heck is a 2015 American documentary that delves into the personal life of Kurt Cobain. Bowie is apparently deeply moved by the visual arts as he experiences them while in West Berlin, and this influences his own painting style in his own renderings of oil portraits and related efforts in his other oil paintings.

The documentary also features previously unreleased archival footage of Simone, sharing a distinct similarity to Moonage Daydream. And perhaps his adventures in other art forms, like Marcel Marceau-type mime or playing the Elephant Man on stage were slightly misjudged in that he had already absorbed all these things, was already drawing on that type of energy in his rock personae. Morgen suggests, probably justly, that Bowie’s great period probably came to an end with the 70s, but that his intellectual curiosity and creativity continued to have something heroic and magnificent as the years continued to go by. That led to a terrifying confusion: for if we could not take the place of God, how could we fill the space we had created within ourselves?

Bowie's third phase is covered by showing him appearing in his tailored Savile Row double breasted business suits and appearing in duets with multiple established artists such as Tina Turner and others. It’s an incredible opening number to this cinematic concert in that it sets a tone that’s almost overwhelming. Of course, Morgen relies heavily on Bowie’s music, allowing several songs to play out in their entirety, including a few killer live versions—there’s a “Let’s Dance” late that might get your audience on their feet.It shouldn't quite work the way it does, but even with its slightly repetitive nature, Moonage Daydream never feels redundant or boring. The documentary's film style of montage also interlaces many film clips from over two dozen different films ranging from the silent era including the film Metropolis up to and including clips from the Stanley Kubrick-directed films Clockwork Orange and 2001: A Space Odyssey. He also moves very quickly through the last two decades or so of Bowie’s life, but that was also a time when the artist was reshaping themes he had visited before and arguably getting more deeply personal in his final works. The film doesn’t cover Bowie’s personal life as such – although it touches on his half-brother Terry and his tense relationship with his mother. From the very beginning of his film, Morgen plays with one of the most traditionally predictable aspects of the music doc in that he’s not interested in chronology.
